- Electric motor technology firm YASA, which began as a spin out from Oxford University before growing and being acquired by Mercedes-Benz AG back in 2021, has had an ongoing partnership with Automobili Lamborghini since early 2024.
- Months later, the two firms have announced the creation of an axial flux electric motor – which has been designed and developed, and will be built in, the UK.
- In the wider picture, the move is also a win for the UK’s EV industry, by supplying to a prestigious OEM.
YASA to supply electric motors for Lamborghini EVs
These electric motors from YASA will initially find their way into Lamborghini’s upcoming plug-in hybrid supercar, the Temerario, which arrives next year. The axial flux motor design allows for reduced weight and a more compact size, with higher power density than conventional electric motors currently on the market. This is also achieved while still offering durability and reliability even at high levels of performance.
While YASA already assisted Lamborghini with an e-propulsion system for its previous hybrid Revuelto, and is now set to manufacture the electric motors that will partly drive the upcoming Temerario, YASA MD Graeme Cook notes that this is ‘just the start’ of the partnership between the two firms. The Temerario PHEV can be seen as a stepping stone for Lamborghini, before it begins its entry into the fully-electric BEV market in approximately 2028, with the arrival of the all-electric Lanzador – which the manufacturer gave some details on last year. We’ll be waiting to see if this fully-electric model also adopts electric motors made by YASA, considering the ongoing partnership between the two.
Graeme Cook, YASA Managing Director, commented:
“Our evolving partnership with Lamborghini is a testament to our shared vision for the future of high-performance electric propulsion. The Temerario advances the path that the Revuelto established earlier this year, further exemplifying the pinnacle of our collaborative efforts and showcasing YASA’s innovative technology.”
Davide Bizzarri, Head of Vehicle Motion at Automobili Lamborghini, added:
“At Lamborghini, our pursuit of perfection drives us to integrate the latest advancements in electric propulsion. Partnering with YASA allows us to push the technical and engineering boundaries of what’s possible, delivering unparalleled performance and driving experiences for our customers.”
