Dedicated performance brand Mercedes-AMG has revealed its latest model, the GT SUV, becoming the first performance SUV developed fully in-house to come out of Affalterbach. It follows the launch of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe earlier this year, using much of the same underlying high-performance motor technology and design style but in a larger SUV format.
New performance electric SUV packs over 1,000 horsepower
Like its coupe cousin, the GT SUV uses three axial flux electric motors to deliver strong performance – up to 1,169 horsepower depending on specification, enough to send this SUV from 0-62mph in just 2.5 seconds, making it one of the fastest accelerating electric cars on the market.
Battery-wise, the GT SUV can be specified with either a 106 kWh or 128 kWh unit, with the latter good for a range of up to 435 miles. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, it can take on DC charging speeds of up to 700kW, good enough to bring the state of charge from 10 to 80% in just 11 minutes on a suitably fast public charger. This also puts the AMG GT SUV among some of the fastest charging electric cars on sale.
Order books for the GT SUV open this week, with three variants on offer – the AMG GT 53, AMG GT 55, and the performance-topping AMG GT 63. Prices for the ‘entry’ model will start at €113,050 in its home country of Germany, putting this large electric SUV up against other options like the Porsche Cayenne Electric and upcoming Range Rover Sport Electric.
Jörg Burzer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz AG, commented:
“With the new Mercedes‑AMG GT SUV, we’re bringing the groundbreaking innovations of our AMG.EA architecture to a full-size SUV. Powered by three pioneering axial flux motors and a revolutionary high-voltage battery, we’re setting a new benchmark in the electric SUV segment. We’re demonstrating that electric performance today no longer requires any compromises in sustained power, range or charging speed.”
