Mazda to target mainstream EV market with new Mazda6e

  • Following Mazda’s first fully-electric vehicle, the MX30, which sold in relatively small numbers, the Japanese manufacturer is set to bring a new EV to the European market which exists in the same segment as some of the most popular electric cars, such as the Tesla Model 3.
  • An all-electric saloon, called the Mazda6e, was revealed at this month’s Brussels Motor Show – and will hit European left-hand-drive markets this year, before a UK launch later down the line in early 2026.
  • The same model has already been on sale in China for a number of months, named locally as the Mazda EZ-6.

Mazda to bring mainstream EV to Europe

The Mazda6e will be available in two battery sizes, offering up ranges of 300 miles and 345 miles. All will come equipped with a 258ps rear driven electric motor, delivering a 0-62mph time of 7.6 seconds.

Already sold in China as the Mazda EZ-6, the EV exists as a joint venture between Mazda and Chinese automaker, Changan Automotive – who, coincidentally, are also plotting a European market entry. This means that in EU-specific markets, the Mazda6e will be liable to China-made EV tariffs – though Mazda told Automotive Logistics that it remains ‘committed to launching its vehicles at a competitive price’. There’s no word on pricing just yet, but with mainland European sales imminent, expect to see those price tags in the next couple of weeks.

As a four-door saloon, the Mazda6e will be a direct competitor to some of the best-selling electric cars on the European market, such as the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4, highlighting the potential large sales Mazda could achieve if the Mazda6e is enough to sway buyers away from the competition.

Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director of Mazda UK, commented on the incoming EV:

“The Mazda6e is the car our dealers have been waiting for, with a nod to the popularity of the Mazda6 it’s a real statement of intent for the future and illustrates how Mazda can bring great design, technology and style to battery electric vehicles. And with the suspension, power steering and braking carefully calibrated by the team at Mazda Research Europe in Frankfurt to match European and UK preferences, I’m sure the Mazda6e will be an electric car that delivers the engaging driver experience you’d expect from Mazda.”
