Maeving RM1S Review: The Smile Machine

Let’s not talk tech, let’s talk emotion. The Maeving RM1S is, quite simply, a smile machine: a smile machine that gets you from A to B and from not smiling, to smiling just as soon as you twist the throttle grip.

Not matter how sub-optimal my day, the Maeving delivered a curvature to my mouth and brightened my day. And to note, I’m not a natural born smiler. Motorcycles deliver a visceral experience that, to my mind, can’t be delivered by any other vehicle type. There is a thrill that you’re exposed to, travelling at speed, sat astride a powerful vehicle with a remarkable power to weight ratio. It gets you every time.

And just look at it, it’s a work of manufacturing art, combining all the best of vintage British motorcycle design with that of contemporary electric vehicles. I always talk about the design museum test: would this vehicle fit a rightful place in a design museum? The answer with the RM1S is a resounding yes. I think I spent more time looking out of my own window at it, rather than riding it.

I spent a month getting to know, and falling in love with, the Maeving RM1S.

Every journey is a joy.

You’re intimately connected to an electric motorcycle with every nerve, limb and digit in your body. It makes you feel truly alive.

I have a dirty little secret in that, even though I’m a full on EV evangelist, I thought that the motorcycle, or rather enginecycle, as it should be called, would be one category where the visceral feel of an engine would win out over a motor. Wrong. EV motorcycles (correct naming convention) are AMAZING.

The quiet of the countryside is your soundtrack, as you ride through the woods and the fields. For someone who loves the natural world above all else (well, second to my family), this experience is just a new category of mobility joy. The ambient thrill of this beautiful machine is a joy to behind.

Away from the emotion, to talk more about the motion, the RM1S does hit 70 mph, although, if you’re not an experienced rider 50 mph feels pretty damn speedy. It has a range of 75 miles, so is a nice commuter / half-day trip machine. It’s super easily charged with a three-pin plug charger. On cost, this is a super inexpensive EV option. New, £7,495.00. Bargain.

If you’re thinking of getting a Maeving, think no longer. Just do it. I’m sure you’ll love it, just as much as I did.
