Liverpool, UK, goes electric with 300 new char.gy EV charge points

  • Liverpool is installing 300 on-street EV charge points, doubling the network to 670 and helping residents without off-street parking.

  • Transitioning to EVs will reduce air pollution, improve public health, and create a cleaner, greener environment.

Liverpool expands EV network with char.gy charge points partnership

Liverpool has announced a new partnership with char.gy to install 300 new on-street electric vehicle (EV) charge points. This major expansion will more than double the city’s existing network, bringing the total to 670 charge points.

Cllr Dan Barrington, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, celebrated the project:

“I’m delighted that we are providing even more on-street car charging for residents. This is a crucial hurdle to overcome in ensuring a just transition from fossil fuels to a net zero city.

Not everyone has a private drive where they can install their own charging point. So, this increase in on-street chargers is a hugely significant infrastructure upgrade that will support the switch to EVs.”

The new chargers will be installed in residential areas, making it easier for people to switch to electric vehicles. This is especially important for the 40% of UK households without off-street parking. For many, installing a home charging point is not an option. With these new chargers, Liverpool is providing a convenient and reliable solution. The charging stations will be powered by 100% renewable energy, supporting the city’s goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2030.

John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, commented:

“We’re excited to partner with Liverpool City Council to make EV charging more accessible, especially for residents without off-street parking. Switching to an electric vehicle should be easy for everyone, no matter where they live.

By installing charge points along residential streets, char.gy brings convenient, reliable, and affordable charging right to drivers’ doorsteps. Residents can easily charge overnight from home and take advantage of our discounted Night Tariff during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lower – just like homeowners with driveways do. By bridging this ‘driveway divide,’ we’re making EV ownership a realistic option for more people.

We look forward to working with Liverpool City Council as they continue their journey toward a cleaner, greener Liverpool and help make sustainable transport a reality for even more residents.”

As the city barrels towards the 2030 ZEV Mandate, this expansion is a big step in making sustainable transport a reality for more residents. The importance of public charging cannot be overstated. Despite hitting massive charging milestones, the UK and Europe must rapidly accelerate charging rollouts to hit our targets.
