The clock has just ticked past the 150-day mark to World EV Day™ 2026, taking place, annually, on Wednesday 9th September. With oil prices surging, EV interest rising, this is a movement that has grown from a lockdown idea to a genuinely global force, and this year’s campaign is set to be more relevant than ever. Now in its seventh year, World EV Day™ marks an opportunity to spread the positive message surrounding EVs – on a global scale.
World EV Day™ 2026 will take place on Wednesday 9th September
This year’s World EV Day™ comes at a topical time, with increased consumer interest around the world for EVs in light of rising oil prices. With Brent crude surging past $100 a barrel in March, the cost savings of going electric, both for consumers and businesses, have never been more apparent.
While this oil crisis may pass, it highlights a fundamental truth – the less reliant we are on oil, the better insulated we are from exactly this kind of crisis. For those around the world considering making the switch, this point is even more pertinent in 2026.
From British Parliament to the White House, a movement that has already made a significant impact
World EV Day™ was founded seven years ago, with the first year of celebration taking place on September 9, 2020.
What began as a digital initiative during lockdown has since grown into something far bigger. Previously, World EV Day™, has gained the attention of the global political system, including being discussed in UK parliament and celebrated by the Biden administration’s National Climate Advisor, Gina McCarthy.
In 2023, World EV Day™ achieved over 200 million X impressions across 119 countries. Previous years have seen the likes of Polestar, Jaguar, Hyundai, Nissan, Tata Motors, ABB, LeasePlan, and many more coming together to celebrate emobility. That kind of reach puts it firmly in the company of the world’s major awareness campaigns.
The annual event includes activations, meet-ups, and announcements that help drive the global EV transition, connecting enthusiasts, industry professionals, and everyday drivers in a way that few campaigns manage.
The context for 2026
In 2025, the theme for World EV Day™ was ‘Share the Spark’, emphasising the importance of collaboration to drive the emobility industry forward. A number of significant activations occurred on the day, including the launch of new EV charging sites, offers of free public charging, pop-up EV test drive events, and more.
For 2026, World EV Day™ is focusing on the topic of ‘Switching Electric: driving down the cost of motoring’.
The EV market itself continues to mature rapidly. Last year saw a number of key milestones for the industry, including the transformation of vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G) from concept into consumer reality, EV policy changes, and an increasingly strong public charging network with speeds of one megawatt now in reach.
Online consumer interest in electric vehicles is following the same upward curve. Search volumes for EV-related terms, charging costs, and comparisons between electric and petrol running costs have all risen sharply in recent weeks, as drivers confronted with higher fuel bills start to do the maths.
With less than 150 days on the clock, and a global energy crisis reinforcing every argument for cleaner, cheaper, and more energy-secure transport, the countdown to World EV Day™ 2026 starts now. Whether you are already driving electric, on the fence, or simply watching the forecourt prices tick upwards, September 9th will be worth your attention.
