IVECO eDaily wins a Guinness World Record after towing over 153 tonnes
There’s a bit of an EV myth that EVs can’t tow. Well, that’s well and truly dispelled with the IVECO eDaily, an all-electric 3.5-tonne van. This has claimed the prestigious Guinness World Record title for “Heaviest weight towed by an electric van”. The ground-breaking electric van towed 153.58 tonnes.
It surpassed records set by all-wheel drive electric cars, hauling a staggering 153.58 tonnes. This achievement is thanks to its powerful 140 kW rear-wheel drive drivetrain generating 400 Nm of torque.
During the record-breaking event on June 20, 2023, the eDaily was hitched to the specially engineered IVECO X-Way Strator truck designed for heavy loads up to 150 tonnes. The trailer carried a Collard Group earth-mover weighing over 50 tonnes, with additional ballast for stability. Completing the 153.58-tonne road train were a fully-loaded IVECO X-Way 8×4 tipper truck and an all-terrain airport fire truck. Both were securely attached with a specialised towbar.
At Blackbushe Airport in Surrey, the eDaily confidently maneuvered along a 100-foot runway, surpassing the record finish line while Guinness World Records invigilators closely observed. The van’s standard “hi-power” mode provided bursts of additional power when faced with demanding towing conditions.
Behind the wheel of the eDaily was Adam Bishop, Britain’s current Strongest Man, who said:
“The van was incredible. The scale of its challenge and what it towed was unbelievable, but it rolled up its sleeves and got on with the job. Amazing!”
This historic moment highlights the advantages of the eDaily’s body-on-frame concept and the immediate torque delivery of its electric motor. These advancements allowed the van to dramatically exceed its official 3.5-tonne towing limit.
“The IVECO eDaily has made history with this impressive record, reinforcing the strength, durability, and extensive capabilities of the eDaily. With an initial target of 130 tonnes, the eDaily far surpassed record requirements. I would like to thank everyone who came together to make this possible – it was a real team effort.”
Mike Cutts, IVECO UK Light Business-line Director
