- Chargepoint operator, IONITY, known for its high speed hubs, has opened a new ultra-rapid EV charging hub in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
- Situated in the busy Kennedy Centre shopping centre, 11 chargers have been installed, capable of delivering up to 350kW.
- This makes it IONITY’s second charging hub within Northern Ireland, and also the largest fast charging hub within the region.
11 new ultra-rapid chargers for Belfast
The newly opened site is located just off the M1 motorway, helping it to serve not only local EV drivers but those making the longer EV journeys across Northern Ireland and Ireland. The opening is just one of the steps in IONITY’s expansion plans this year, with another ultra-rapid charging hub in Dungannon, about 40 miles west of Belfast, set to open this summer.
Whilst currently only a single EV, the Lucid Air, is capable of charging at the maximum 350kW charging speed provided by the IONITY ultra-rapid chargers, this ensures the station remains futureproofed as the electric transition continues, and an increasing number of EVs with ultra-rapid charging capabilities hit the market. It also ensures that other EVs with record charging speeds, such as the Porsche Taycan and Maserati Granturismo Folgore electric sports cars, are able to reliably charge with their 270kW charging capabilities. The continual opening of ultra-rapid charging stations such as these is crucial for the UK to reliably keep to its 2035 ZEV mandate
Andreas Atkins, IONITY’s UK & Ireland Country Manager, said:
“Belfast charging station, combined with our recently opened Toome station and the upcoming Drumgormal station in Dungannon (expected to open Summer 2024), is enabling long-distance travel in Northern Ireland.”
