UK public charging network InstaVolt is introducing one of the country’s cheapest ultra-rapid public charging rates, with a rate of just 55p per kWh now offered on its ultra-rapid network between the quieter hours of 8pm and 7am. Zapmap estimates that the average price of ultra-rapid charging in the UK currently stands at 76p per kWh, highlighting the significant saving available for drivers able to charge off-peak at InstaVolt’s charging locations.
At 55p per kWh, a 40kWh charge will cost approximately £22, showing that EVs can still be more affordable to run than fossil fuelled-cars even when recharged on the public charging network.
InstaVolt says this new pricing has been made possible thanks to the rollout of battery storage across a number of its sites, including at its 44-bay Winchester Superhub. By storing energy overnight, when grid electricity is at its cheapest and site demand is at its lowest, these systems are allowing InstaVolt to pass the savings directly onto customers. This hub will also benefit from new pricing over the summer – with 70p per kWh during all hours, and app users benefiting from a reduced 65p per kWh rate alongside the 55p per kWh rate during off-peak hours.
Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, commented:
“We believe public charging should be as affordable and accessible as possible, and our off-peak rate is a direct expression of that commitment. Fifty-five pence per kWh, for eleven hours a day, available to any driver through our free app: no membership, no catch. We are investing in the infrastructure to make this possible, and as that investment grows, we expect to be able to go further. This is what innovation through action looks like.”
