- Statewide initiative Go Electric Vehicle Indiana (GOEVIN) has announced the first recipients of its Charging Infrastructure Funding Opportunity, with over $3.3 million worth of funding set to support 36 separate public charging infrastructure projects across the state.
- $3,176,000 of funding will help support 18 DC fast charger projects, while a further $169,000 has been allocated to 18 Level 2 public charging projects.
- The funding will help bring needed charging infrastructure across areas of demand in Indiana.
A boost to Indiana’s public charging infrastructure is on the horizon
Under the new funding, the 18 DC fast charging locations will be situated along Indiana’s ‘Alternative Fuel Corridors’, being strategically located close to or on major highway routes that will help enable long-distance EV travel across the state and beyond. These stations will have 24/7 access, in areas such as shopping centres, restaurants, and travel hubs. Firms awarded funding to create these new fast-charging stations include Tesla, who will create one new Supercharging location in the city of Fort Wayne, but most significantly gas station operator Pilot Flying J, who will open eight new charging locations under the funding.
On the other hand, the 18 slower-speed Level 2 EV charging projects will address a growing need for public charging in both urban and rural communities, particularly for those without the ability to charge up at home.
Construction of all 36 projects is expected to get underway later this year, with all aiming to be completed and live by the end of 2026.
Drive Clean Indiana Programme Director, Ryan Lisek, commented:
“The GOEVIN awards build upon the currently deployed charging infrastructure in the GOEVIN program. Indiana has invested over $13 billion to support the development of electric vehicles and battery manufacturing facilities. The GOEVIN investments will support the next generation of Hoosier EV drivers.”
