India announces an ambitious 5-year plan to introduce 100,000 electric buses
India is gearing up to introduce a significant initiative aimed at transforming urban transport. The government plans to roll out 100,000 electric buses as part of the Bharat Urban Megabus Mission.

This move comes in response to growing concerns about pollution and congestion in India’s major cities. Currently, there are around 65 cities with populations over 1 million, and this number is expected to rise to 75-80 soon. By targeting these cities with electric buses, the government hopes to encourage more people to use public transport.
The plan includes goals to make public transport account for 60% of all motorised trips by 2030, increasing to 80% by 2036. Additionally, it is ensuring that non-motorized trips, such as walking and cycling, represent 50% of all urban journeys by 2030.
To support this mission, the government will invest 1.75 lakh crore INR (about 19.24 billion euros). This budget will fund electric bus operations and related infrastructure, including bus stops and terminals. Moreover, it will also help develop 5,000 kilometres of walkways and cycling paths.
