Hyundai to commence solid state EV battery pilot this year

  • Following in the steps of other EV manufacturers who are gearing up their solid state battery production operations, such as Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Stellantis, and more, Hyundai are reported to be close to starting pilot production of its own solid state batteries.
  • Going into future EVs from the manufacturer, these batteries will bring improved range, safety, and efficiency, to new models.
  • As originally reported by the Korean Car Blog, Hyundai Motor Group is in the final steps of setting up a fully solid-state battery pilot production line within its battery research centre in South Korea.

Hyundai primed to enter the solid state battery game

The pilot production is expected to commence this month, which brings Hyundai up to speed with many other players in the automotive industry. From this, the manufacturer is expected to trial such batteries within prototype EVs this year, before bringing a mass-produced solid state EV to market by 2030 – a time by which we are likely to see a wide number of solid state battery-based electric cars on the market.

Hyundai has so far remained quiet on the specifics of its solid state batteries, though we can expect that to change over the coming months and years. However, judging by solid state batteries from other firms, these next generation units could double range over existing EVs, thanks to their higher energy density and smaller footprint.

Elsewhere in the industry, Toyota is expected to bring EVs with solid state batteries to market by 2027 – with ranges of up to 745 miles claimed. Similarly, Samsung SDI have shown off a solid state battery which can propel an EV over 600 miles on one charge, which it also says will arrive in 2027. Meanwhile, as a stepping stone towards fully solid state batteries, MG is set to launch an EV with a semi-solid state battery in 2025 – obtaining many of the benefits of a solid state solution but at a lower cost.
