Hyundai Motor Group to expand European R&D sites, as EV sector grows

  • Hyundai Motor Group is set to expand its European research and development facilities by over 25,000 square metres, which comes ahead of the OEM’s goal to achieve zero tailpipe emissions across the continent by 2035.
  • The expansion includes a new campus at the Hyundai Technical Centre, which will focus on powertrain testing including EVs, and an expansion to its Nurburgring test facility – with the latter helping to integrate its performance division and EVs further.
  • The new facilities, which are also expected to generate new jobs at Hyundai, hope to accelerate and improve EV technology over the coming years.

Hyundai expands R&D facilities in Europe

The new ‘Square’ campus, opening at Hyundai’s Technical Centre in Germany, comes in at 25,000 square metres – and encompasses a noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) dyno, as well as separate chassis and powertrain dynos. All, Hyundai hope, will ‘set new benchmarks for the automotive industry’. A big focus within this campus will be improving EVs, along with other electrification technology, infotainment systems, and advanced driver assistance systems. Building on Hyundai’s sustainability push, the facility itself also incorporates renewable materials in its construction, along with a solar panel and heat pump setup.

Also included as part of its R&D expansion is an 834 square metre extension to its Nurburgring test facility. This includes new workshops, labs, and increased availability to charge electric vehicles – another crucial move, as Hyundai plans to bring more track-tested, all-electric N cars to market in the coming years.
