The Hyundai IONIQ 5 SUV will showcase Waymo’s autonomous driving tech
Hyundai Motor Company and Waymo have announced a new partnership to bring autonomous driving to the masses. The multi-year deal will bring Waymo’s advanced self-driving technology integrated into Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 SUV.
The partnership will start with IONIQ 5 vehicles being built at Hyundai’s new EV plant in Georgia. The automaker will fit these cars with Waymo’s sixth-generation autonomous technology. The goal is to produce a large number of these vehicles over the coming years to meet the growing demand for Waymo’s services.
On-road testing of the Waymo-enabled IONIQ 5s will begin in late 2025. The cars will then become available to Waymo One riders shortly after.
This partnership is just the first step. Both companies are exploring more opportunities for collaboration in the future. Together, they will scale the use of autonomous driving technology as a carbon-cutting tool.
