Hypervolt and EDF partner to extend grid balancing and energy management software
EDF and Hypervolt have teamed up to create a new service that uses EVs to help balance the national electricity grid. How? By offering the first-ever frequency response services from EVs.
The service works through Hypervolt’s UltraGrid software, which allows EV chargers to automatically adjust their energy usage. This will help maintain grid stability, especially during times of high demand or when excess renewable energy is available. EDF’s PowerShift technology, already used to optimise energy use across the grid, will manage these adjustments in real time.
Stuart Fenner, Wholesale Market Services Commercial Director at EDF, stated:
“Our partnership with Hypervolt highlights EDF Wholesale Market Services’ commitment to integrating EV solutions into our award-winning PowerShift solution, leveraging our unique capability to create value in all available markets. We look forward to helping more customers optimise their energy usage and actively engaging in the transition towards a low carbon future.”
Hypervolt charger users can access EDF’s smart charging tariff, which uses low-cost, low-carbon energy. This means they can save money on their charging while reducing their carbon footprint. The service works automatically, adjusting charging schedules based on grid conditions without needing manual input from users. Even Hypervolt charger owners not on EDF’s supply can opt into savings through the PowerShift system.
Founder and CEO of Hypervolt, Flavian Alexandru, added:
“We are thrilled to partner with EDF to expand our innovative smart tariff offerings. Together, we aim to deliver unmatched affordability, quality, and user experience, driving forward the energy transition.”
This collaboration highlights the growing role of EVs in the wider clean energy transition. By using advanced technology, EDF and Hypervolt aim to make charging EVs more affordable, sustainable, and efficient for everyone.
