Greenlane opens its flagship EV charging hub in Colton to begin upgrading the I-15

Greenlane has officially opened its first flagship EV charging centre in Colton, California. The new site is a major step forward in building a zero-emission freight corridor along Interstate 15.

The Colton Greenlane Center™ is for medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks. It features more than 40 high-speed chargers, including 12 pull-through lanes for big rigs and 29 bobtail lanes.

Greenlane’s first commercial fleet customer, Nevoya, will begin operations at the Colton site in early May 2025

Nevoya is the first zero-emissions electric trucking carrier in the US It plans to grow its partnership with Greenlane to include up to 100 trucks.

The Colton hub is the first of three sites they are building along the I-15 freight route. Greenlane also has its sights set on Long Beach, Barstow, and Baker, California. Each location is going to be about 60 to 90 miles apart.

The technology at Colton is top-tier. The pull-through lanes offer CCS 400 kW dual-port chargers with liquid-cooled cables, built for Class 8 trucks. The bobtail lanes use 180 kW chargers. The site also includes smart energy management and room for future expansion, including megawatt charging.

The project was supported by a $15 million grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Local leaders and company executives celebrated the grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

This development aligns with a broader industry trend identified in a recent Paren report, which describes the US fast charging sector’s evolution into a “Charging 2.0” era. This phase emphasises enhanced reliability, improved customer experience, and the expansion of larger charging stations. Notably, non-Tesla networks have shown improved reliability, and the average number of ports per station has increased, reflecting the industry’s commitment to accommodating growing EV adoption

Greenlane’s CEO, Patrick Macdonald-King, commented:

“America’s trucking industry keeps our economy moving, and we are committed to supporting the drivers at the heart of it. Opening the Colton site and bringing on a top-tier partner like Nevoya in the same week is awesome, but it also reinforces that investment in high-traffic freight corridors helps drive economic growth by supporting local businesses through increased traffic and creating quality job opportunities for municipalities that have sought this growth for years. By ensuring truckers have access to reliable, high-speed charging when and where they need it, our team is helping electrify the backbone of American commerce.”
