Greek cities go electric, with 89 FUSO eCanter recycling trucks delivered

  • The Greek capital Athens, along with major city Thessaloniki, have ordered a combined total of 89 fully-electric FUSO eCanter trucks, to join both cities’ waste collection fleets.
  • The trucks will be fitted with bodies from KAOUSSIS, Greek’s leading refuse truck manufacturer.
  • With the lack of engine helping to reducing noise pollution in the areas which it collects, KAOUSSIS also paid special attention into making the rubbish collection mechanisms just as quiet, too.

A big sustainability move from Greece’s two biggest cities

The FUSO eCanter trucks, which are manufactured at FUSO’s Portuguese facility before having recycling truck bodies applied in Greece by KAOUSSIS, will have a range of 140km in this specific form – that’s more than adequate for a vehicle which only travels within a city, and is able to be fully charged every night. The short 3.4 metre wheelbase, along with the eCanter’s smallest turning circle in its segment, should significantly help these bin lorries navigate some of the more narrow streets around the two ancient Greek cities.

Electrifying recycling trucks in particular seems like a no brainer – going hand-in-hand with a recycling truck’s original sustainability aim, as the trucks not only collect valuable materials for recycling and reduce waste, but now also keep the air clean in the areas in which they pick up. Additionally, their visibility, with zero emission decals adorning these trucks, will help further promote the wide capability of EVs, for both locals and the vast number of tourists who visit both Athens and Thessaloniki every year.

Florian Schulz, Head of Sales, Marketing and Customer Services at FUSO Europe, commented on the deal:

“Thanks to its compact dimensions and high chassis load-bearing capacity, the electric eCanter is ideally suited for waste disposal companies that operate in narrow streets. In addition, the vehicle is locally emission-free and quiet, making it possible to collect refuse in the early morning in densely populated areas. This makes it particularly suitable for municipal applications.”

KAOUSSIS hopes to offer electric recycling trucks to more Greek cities, with its Head of Production, Dimitris Kaoussis, noting:

“It is particularly important to us to make waste collection CO2-neutral and emission-free. With the FUSO eCanter as the basis, we benefit from the vehicle’s high bodybuilder friendliness as well as its excellent maneuverability. Together with our engineers, we have worked on the technology to meet all regulations for the operation of such a vehicle and we are proud that this solution has already convinced the first municipalities.”
