Government support powers up Michigan: First NEVI-funded EV charging station opens in Lansing

  • Michigan opens its first NEVI-funded EV charging station opened in Lansing, featuring six Rivian DC fast chargers, including one for larger vehicles.
  • The NEVI program supports a nationwide EV charging network, making electric vehicle ownership more practical and boosting local economies.
  • Michigan will receive $110 million in NEVI funding by 2026 to build over 100 fast-charging stations, with seven already in the design phase.

First NEVI-funded charging station in Michigan opens, marking a milestone for the sustainable funding program

Michigan’s first NEVI-funded EV charging station is now open in Lansing, marking a milestone in the program. This station, located off I-96 at a Meijer grocery store, features six Rivian DC fast chargers, including one designed for larger vehicles or those pulling trailers.

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program is a federal initiative which is funding the nation’s EV infrastructure rollout. With North America increasingly turning to electric power, the NEVI program is more important than ever. By funding charging stations like this one, NEVI helps make EV ownership practical for more Americans.

Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the Joint Office, commented:

“Michigan is an important automotive center in America, and the state’s first NEVI-funded charging station opens up new mobility options for Americans. Building NEVI-funded charging stations in convenient locations boosts local economic development and provides Michiganders with easy options to charge in their community, giving more Americans the confidence to choose electric.”

This Lansing station is part of a broader plan to expand EV infrastructure in Michigan.

By 2026, the state will receive $110 million in NEVI funding to install over 100 fast-charging stations. Seven additional stations are already in the design phase, with more expected soon.

NEVI is working with all 50 states to build a robust, accessible charging network. This ensures that all drivers, no matter where they live, can gain the benefits that come with emobility. Michigan’s first NEVI station is an important step toward that vision.
