GM and ChargePoint push ahead with 500 new EV charging stations despite uncertainties
General Motors (GM) is teaming up with ChargePoint to install 500 ultrafast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the US. The companies will have the stations ready for public use by the end of next year.

Right now, a lack of public chargers is slowing EV adoption. Michigan, for example, has a goal of 100,000 public chargers by 2030. However, there are currently fewer than 2,000 in the state. Nationally, there are over 192,000 chargers, with about 1,000 added each week.
Wade Sheffer, GM Energy vice president, commented:
“Continuing to provide customers with better charging options helps to remove barriers to EV adoption and improve the ownership experience. With ultrafast charging, Omni Port technology and excellent customer experiences, this collaboration should be another reason why EV drivers and the EV-curious should be excited.”
The new stations will feature ChargePoint’s Omni Port system, which supports multiple connector types without adapters. Many will also offer ultrafast charging.
However, the EV industry faces challenges. Some federal incentives, like the $7,500 tax credit for EV buyers, may soon be removed. However, with uncertainties surrounding the future of the nation’s infrastructure rollout, many companies across the US remain committed to their installation targets.
