Global sales for all plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) up an incredible 249 percent in April 2021

Global registrations of new electric cars were up an incredible 249 percent for April 2021, with a total of 392,000 units sold, according to figures from EV Sales Blog. This is the fourth-best month ever for plug-in sales. With results like this plug-in sales for the year could top five million.

More importantly, of those sales 251,000 units were zero-emission battery electric vehicles (BEVs). This was a 235 percent increase and accounts for 3.7 percent share of the total car market. Plug-in vehicles accounted for a 5.7 percent share which shows a 1.7 percent share increase over last year (4 percent).

In terms of sales, Wuling’s Hong Guang Mini electric car topped the charts with 29,251 units. Tesla’s Model Y once again beat the Model S for the second month running. This Tesla duo were second and third with 16,232 and 14,980 sales respectively.

Volkswagen’s ID.4 moved into the top five and this now sits in fourth place with 10,318 sales. Similarly, its smaller sibling, the Volkswagen ID.3, made it in too, with 5,941 sales. This shows that VW’s new ID. family of electric cars are a massive hit around the globe in less a year of being on the market.

Top five best selling electric vehicles for April 2021

When it comes to overall sales for the year-to-date Telsa’s Model 3 tops the charts with 141,696 sales. April’s chart-topping Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV sits in second place with 125,925 overall sales in 2021 with Tesla’s Model Y in third selling 72,296.

It will be interesting to see if the affordable Hong Guang Mini EV ends up leading the charts for 2021, especially if this Chinese company, which is backed by General Motors (GM), starts to export to more countries around the world.

More Chinese car brands round out the top five sales year-to-date. BYD’s (Build Your Dreams) Han EV affordable luxury saloon is the fourth best seller with 27,100 sales. Rounding out the top five sales so far in 2021 is extremely affordable Great Wall’s (GW) Ora Black Cat mini electric car selling 23,803 units.
