- As General Motors continues to expand its all-electric lineup in North America across the brands of Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC, the OEM has achieved an impressive milestone as the second biggest seller of EVs in the U.S. so far this year.
- Beaten only by Tesla, General Motors sold over 62,000 EVs in the U.S. from the start of 2025 through to May.
- This sales figure nearly doubles its position from a year ago, highlighting impressive sales growth for its electric vehicles. Could GM overtake Tesla?
General Motors edges closer to Tesla in U.S. EV market share
May in particular was the second-best month on record for GM’s EV sales, following a 94% year-on-year growth in EV sales in Q1. In the first two months of Q2, GM accounted for approximately 15.5% of the U.S. EV market, which also represented a doubling over its market share position one year ago.
General Motors has a diverse EV portfolio, consisting of 13-specific models, helping it to achieve this significant EV market share. The best selling EV brand under its cohort was Chevrolet, with that brand accounting for over 37,000 of the 62,000 GM EVs sold in the U.S. through to May. The Chevrolet Equinox EV, which starts at around $33,600, making a significant contribution to this record sales figures. GM’s partnerships with various CPOs – such as its ongoing EVgo partnership – are also likely to be assisting its EV sales.
Tesla still remains the number one seller of EVs in the U.S., with over 128,000 models delivered in the U.S. in the first quarter alone. General Motors is expected to reveal its Q2 sales statistics on the 1st of July, which could indicate whether it’ll continue to increase its EV sales figures in the direction of Tesla.
Rory Harvey, Executive VP and President of Global Markets, commented:
“Customers are responding in record numbers to our world-class portfolio of electric and gas-powered vehicles. In the first two months of the second quarter, we more than doubled our EV sales compared to the same period last year.”
And it’s not just North America where GM is hoping to gain more EV market share. In an ambitious brand relaunch, Cadillac recently returned to Europe as an electric-only brand, with its European lineup recently expanding with the fully-electric VISTIQ SUV.
