  • Geely, which already sells EVs in the United Kingdom under its owned brands such as Volvo Cars, Lotus, and Polestar, is set to bring its Geely Auto brand to the UK, kicking off with an electric mid-size SUV called the EX5.
  • Sales of the EX5 in the UK are expected to start from the fourth quarter of the year, with pricing yet to be confirmed.
  • Geely have also commissioned Lotus Engineering to undertake an assessment of the EX5’s chassis and dynamics, with the potential to finely tune the car for European and UK roads before it goes on sale later this year.

The Geely EX5 comes to the UK this year

Geely has already been selling EVs across the UK (and the world) through other brands such as Volvo Cars, Polestar, and Lotus, but this marks the first time a vehicle will be sold under the Geely badge itself in the UK. To enter the country, Geely has created a new distributor, called Geely Auto UK, which will integrate local dealers, suppliers, and strategic partners, all under one arm. The EX5 will be the first of several Geely-branded cars to land in the UK, with Geely Auto noting that a ‘diverse range’ of cars tailored for the UK market will be arriving.

The fully-electric Geely EX5 is already on sale in other countries around the world such as China, Australia, and Thailand, but UK sales will start later this summer, with the first examples being delivered to customers in the fourth quarter of the year.

Geely Auto also assigned Lotus Engineering to carry out an evaluation of the EX5’s dynamics, assessing its suitability to the unique conditions of UK and European roads. Geely has hinted at future tuning by Lotus of the EX5 taking place specifically for the European market, on the back of this assessment.

Mike Yang, General Manager at Geely Auto UK, commented:

“We know the Geely EX5 is a great product with several core features that will appeal to a British audience. That’s why we chose it to be our first passenger car for sale in the UK. However, we’re aware that UK customers have unique demands.

For that reason, before we release the car for sale, we’re working with the experts at Lotus Engineering to make sure we have a car that’s in line with expectations. Lotus Engineering has a formidable track record along with some of the best R&D resources, so we’re delighted to be working closely with them.”

The imminent arrival of the Geely EX5 marks another Chinese automotive brand landing in the country. Other recent entrants include Leapmotor, Changan Automobile, and Geely’s own commercial vehicle brand, Farizon Auto.
