Full Circle CI white paper provides new insights on UK public charging

  • Full Circle Continuous Improvement has released a new white paper, called ‘Plugging into the Future’ – which looks at the state of EV charging in the UK, highlighting the needs from EV drivers both now and in the future.
  • Based on a survey of over 200 UK-based EV drivers, the full research reveals several key insights for CPOs and the wider charging industry.
  • Topics covered included current challenges with charging, desired improvements, and current satisfaction levels, just to name a few.

New insights for the UK charging industry revealed

The white paper, which can be read in full here, carries a number of notable statistics. When it came to payment on public chargers, the majority, 74.6%, were either satisfied or extremely satisfied with the ease of payment at charge points. With contactless payments becoming mandatory next month at all new public chargers above 8kW, and all existing chargers above 50kW, this satisfaction rate should continue to rise in the coming years.

However, when it came to satisfaction of the price per kWh on public chargers, these figures were significantly different. Just 18.8% of those surveyed were satisfied or extremely satisfied with these prices, with the remaining 81.2% being dissatisfied or extremely dissatisfied. Other challenges noted included only 15.1% of EV drivers feeling that their feedback to CPOs was heard or acted on, while a further 41.3% had reported issues when it came to both charger availability and accessibility.

From the findings, Full Circle CI came up with five specific recommendations for CPOs, in order to increase charger use. This includes a simplification of the charging process, alongside increased levels of customer support and feedback, accessibility, availability, and safety. It also called for improvements in charging speed and reliability, alongside more consistent and transparent pricing. These were all challenges also raised at the UK’s most recent EV SUMMIT. These findings can not only benefit CPOs, but EV adoption as a whole, particularly for those without the capability to home charger who will rely solely on public charging operations.

Liz Allan, Managing Director at Full Circle CI, commented:

“Our white paper identifies significant improvement opportunities across the EV charging experience. “From charging performance and reliability to customer support excellence and standardisation, we’ve uncovered crucial insights directly impacting charger utilisation. The data shows that by addressing these comprehensive challenges through targeted improvements, CPOs can significantly enhance customer satisfaction and their return on investment.

Most importantly, our findings demonstrate that success lies in taking a holistic approach. CPOs focusing on operational excellence while building robust customer support systems and streamlined processes will see the greatest gains in charger utilisation. It’s about creating an ecosystem that works seamlessly for every EV driver at every charging session.”
