- After European CPO Fastned announced its intentions to move into the Spanish market last year, the firm has now debuted in the country with its first ultra-rapid charging sites.
- The first two locations have opened at the Garraf Service Area south of Barcelona, with a charging station located on both the northbound and southbound service areas.
- The move marks Fastned’s rapid expansion across multiple European regions, recently opening up its first sites in territories such as Italy and Northern Ireland.
Fastned expands into Spain
Each station consists of eight 400kW CCS charge points, and two 50kW CHAdeMO charge points. The 400kW speeds on offer are some of the fastest currently offered in Europe, allowing drivers of the fastest charging electric cars on the market to take full advantage of their advertised recharge speeds.
The opening marks a key milestone for Fastned, as these two locations now become the most southern locations across its European charging network, with more Spanish Fastned locations also in the pipeline. Spain already has a need for more public charging infrastructure across its highway network, as highlighted by the International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2025 report. In countries such as Germany, Norway, and France, over 90% of their highway networks have a charging point at least every 50 kilometres. However, in Spain, less than 80% of its highway network has a charging point every 50 kilometres. Fastned’s expansion here will help to address that.
Fastned recently teamed up with three other European CPOs, Atlante, Electra, and IONITY, to create the Spark Alliance. Under this agreement, charge point discovery and payment covers charge points across all four CPOs in their respective native apps, creating seamless access to over 11,000 charge points across the continent.
