- European charge point operator, Fastned, has entered Italy for the first time, opening a new eight-bay ultra-rapid charging station alongside the country’s A4 Autostrada.
- Each charger will be capable of charge speeds of up to 400kW, allowing them to take full advantage of even the fastest charging EVs on the market.
- The CPO is set to bring further rapid charging sites to Italy in the near future, with upcoming locations already acquired.
Fastned joins Italy
This first station is opening in a rest area off the major A4 Autostrada in the North of the country, a region where EV adoption is higher. However, more Fastned chargers in different locations are also on their way. Fastned’s expansion into the country will be a welcome addition, with the country settings its own target of having 110,000 public EV charging points in the country by 2030.
While EV market share in Italy has typically lagged behind other European countries like Norway and the United Kingdom, it’s steadily rising to higher levels of adoption ahead of the EU’s 2035 ZEV mandate. Italian EV sales in January 2025 were up 132% year-on-year, with market share rising to 5% from 2% in January 2024. There are now over 300,000 fully-electric vehicles registered within Italy’s car parc.
The expansion marks Fastned’s rapid growth this year, with the CPO also marking Northern Ireland as a new customer base, after it opened its first charging hub in the region just last week. With over 340 charging stations within its European network, Fastned has an ambitious goal to open 1,000 stations across Europe by just 2030.
Michiel Langezaal, Co-Founder and CEO of Fastned, commented:
“I’m delighted to open our first station in Italy – a nation with a peerless automotive history and huge potential to accelerate the switch to electric mobility. This large and highly visible station at Truck Park Brescia Est will benefit drivers in Italy’s most EV-dense region, and shows what is possible when ambitious partners come together in long-term agreements, such as we have with A4 Holding. Large and impactful stations like this one are only possible under lasting and stable partnerships; that is how we will power the transition to electric mobility in Italy. We will continue to advocate for open markets and fair access to public tenders for locations to ensure we can bring more of Fastned’s award-winning charging stations to EV drivers across this beautiful country.”
