  • UK motorway services provider Extra MSA has committed to a significant boost in the level of public charging infrastructure it offers across its various locations.
  • The provider will increase its number of EV charging facilities by 290%, before the end of 2026.
  • Extra MSA will continue to work with CPO partner IONITY, who are helping to provide the infrastructure needed to support the growing number of EV drivers using Extra’s service areas.

UK motorways set to receive significant EV charging boost

IONITY has already provided a significant amount of public charging infrastructure for Extra’s service areas, with around 60 350kW ultra-rapid charge points located across its service area network. This number is set to rise to a total of 234 charge points in the future, helping to further enable long-distance EV travel across the UK’s motorway network.

Just recently, IONITY added additional chargers to Extra’s Cobham services site on London’s M25 outer ring road – the busiest motorway services in the UK, helping build on a key piece of infrastructure that supports drivers across Surrey and those travelling to two of London’s major airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.

Tom Dobson, CEO at Extra MSA Group, commented:

“IONITY’s 350kW ultra-fast charge points are some of the highest-powered and most efficient facilities available, reflecting our commitment to investing in the best possible customer experience. We know that we have a part to play in driving forward the net zero agenda, so we’re determined to expand our EV charging provision by almost 300% by end of 2026 and build on our legacy as the UK’s leading motorway service provider for our EV commitment.

We look forward to continuing to work with IONITY and other partners to ensure that we are leading the way in creating an EV-friendly motorway network and emphasising the importance of green skills, helping to meet the needs of drivers both today and in future.”

Andreas Atkins, Country Manager UK & Ireland at IONITY, added:

“We’ve been partnered with Extra MSA for many years, leading the way in delivering the highest standard of infrastructure on some of the UK’s busiest roads. IONITY chargers not only attract hundreds of thousands of users per year, but also attract new footfall, boosting exposure and revenues for the service stations that are the backbone of UK travel.

Increasing 350kW chargers across England to meet the 2026 target, shows the demand for more sustainable travel, and aligns with our commitment to more than double the number of publicly available stations and charging points in the UK for the third consecutive year.

By continuing to expand our ultra-rapid charging infrastructure at key locations, EV drivers can feel assured they’ll have access to convenient, reliable, affordable power to fuel their electric travel across Europe, all powered by 100% renewable energy.”
