EV sales reach record highs amid oil uncertainty, with less than a week until World EV Day 2026

This year's World EV Day comes at a pivotal time for the electric vehicle industry

World EV Day returns on Wednesday 9th September this year for its seventh edition, and there’s now less than a week to go. This year’s event follows a run of high-profile celebrations of the day in previous years, including offers of free EV charging at public chargers across the world, EV test drive events operated by firms such as Sainsbury’s Smart Charge, and Audi’s previous mainstream campaign with FC Bayern Munich to celebrate the day back in 2024.

The theme for this year is ‘Switching Electric: driving down the cost of motoring’. This narrative puts running costs at the centre of the campaign for a year that has seen oil prices rise to record highs, with those costs translating to increased interest and sales of electric vehicles, both from consumers and businesses.

The UK, for example, recently saw new EV registrations rise a significant 49% year-on-year, back in July. Thanks to falling battery costs, an increasing number of affordable electric cars are entering the market, and data also shows that the average price of a new EV now matches a new petrol car in some markets, making EV ownership a clear choice – particularly for those able to charge at home.

The picture is similar globally. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that EV sales reached new highs in 50 countries in the second quarter of 2026, while over 90 countries recording year-on-year growth over the first half of 2026.

With just days to go, there’s still time to plan how you’ll celebrate the day – whether as an individual, or as a business. Find out more about World EV Day, here.
