EV charging expands in Europe as Allego opens 1,000th station

  • Availability of ultra-rapid charge points within Europe’s public EV charging network has taken a step up, with European CPO Allego announcing the opening of its 1,000th ultra-rapid charging station, marking a significant milestone for the firm.
  • The new high-power station, located off the major A7 autoroute between Lyon and Marseille, joins the growing Allego charging network which already spans 16 European countries.
  • Currently, Allego’s public network is enabling nearly one million EV charging sessions every month, with that number set to grow.

Allego reaches 1,000 stations as EV charging expansion continues

The new location comprises ultra-fast chargers capable of delivering speeds of up to 400kW, enough to take full advantage of some of the fastest charging electric cars on the market. The new EV charging station also supports Plug & Charge technology, allowing the charging payment process to be authenticated directly through the car – no physical debit card or charging card required. As we reported last year, Allego is also planning to roll out this convenience-boosting payment technology across its entire public charging network.

Since Allego launched its first public EV charging stations over a decade ago, it now has 1,000 public charging stations live, offering ultra-rapid charging speeds that allow EVs to be recharged and back on the road in record time. These stations are located across a diverse range of areas, from ultra-urban locations to chargers located at service areas on major motorways. Helping users to discover these EV charging locations, Allego plans to launch its own app by the end of the year, bringing together discovery of all its charging locations, along with route planning and charging management.

Following the milestone, Allego will continue to expand its offering of ultra-rapid charging infrastructure across Europe. In areas where grid constraints could be a barrier to creating new infrastructure, Allego recently revealed plans to implement battery storage-integrated EV chargers, allowing the rollout of ultra-rapid charging in more locations.

Christian Zeh, COO of Allego, commented:

“Allego’s expansion focuses on locations that make charging part of everyday life. Along Europe’s highways, stations connect long-distance routes, while in towns and cities, chargers are increasingly integrated into destinations such as retail parks, supermarkets, and hotels. Partnerships with trusted European brands like Carrefour, Van der Valk, REWE, and Burger King ensure drivers can combine charging with convenience and comfort. I would like to thank the Allego teams who make this possible every day.”
