- Pan-European chargepoint operator, Allego, has partnered with battery storage and chargepoint manufacturer KREISEL Electric, to roll out a new generation of battery-integrated public EV chargers onto its network.
- The move is set to allow ultra-rapid EV chargers to be rolled out with ease in locations with grid constraints, and without the need to undertake costly grid connection projects.
- With the benefits brought by such a solution, we’re likely to see similar battery-integrated charge points deployed worldwide by other CPOs, in areas that require them.
Allego and KREISEL Electric bypass grid constraints with new chargepoint
Under the agreement between the two firms, Allego will install KREISEL Electric’s battery-integrated CHIMERO chargepoints, which have a maximum charging power of 240kW, amongst its network in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, from the third quarter of this year. A wider rollout of these battery-integrated chargers to other territories within Allego’s reach is expected to start from 2026.
With Allego already operating over 35,000 chargepoints across Europe, these new chargers will allow ultra-rapid charging to come to more locations without the need for additional grid connections, or those where a separately-located battery storage system is unfeasible. The battery integrated within the chargepoint, which keeps itself topped up whilst not in use, can allow power demand to be spread over the duration of a charge, rather than causing a sudden spike in demand. This can allow the chargepoint to instantly deliver its maximum charging speed, improving satisfaction for the customer in terms of speed and minimal outages. This spread power demand is what will allow these chargers to be rolled out without the need for costly grid connections.
Guillaume Goijen, Director of Charging Solutions & Site Design at Allego, commented:
“Partnering with KREISEL Electric empowers Allego to expand into regions held back by grid congestion, now and in the near future. We have tested the system extensively at our test site and on live pilot sites. This economically efficient technology improves EV drivers’ charging experience and accelerates the transition to sustainable mobility. High power charging with low power impact!”
Markus Kreisel, Member of the Management Board and Co-Founder of KREISEL Electric, added:
“This great partnership with Allego once again confirms that we have developed a market-relevant solution with our battery-integrated KREISEL CHIMERO chargers. Allego is the right partner for our systems with the needed deep knowledge of the market behavior and needs. Both CPOs and EV-drivers benefit from a reliable hardware, continuous energy supply, and efficient infrastructure.”
This new battery-integrated charging solution isn’t the only innovative feature rolled out by Allego recently. It has also begun implementing the Plug & Charge protocol across its chargers, allowing payment and authentication to be interfaced through the car’s charge port and computer, without the need for a charging card or mobile phone app.
