- British electric vehicle conversion specialists, Electrogenic, have added another car model to a growing list of plug-and-play EV conversion kits that it offers, with a conversion kit now added for the original, mark one Mazda MX-5 – with the original examples now over 35 years old.
- The kit reaffirms the MX-5’s original ethos of lightness, with the electric conversion kit adding just 100kg to the total weight of the car.
- This new conversion adds to the large range of conversion kits that Electrogenic offer, with other models easily convertible to fully-electric including the DeLorean DMC-12, original MINI, Porsche 911 Classic, and the Land Rover Defender – alongside the one-off bespoke conversions the firm also offers.
Electrogenic adds the MX-5 to its EV conversion lineup
The kit, which is available for all MK1 MX-5s, is being offered worldwide through Electrogenic’s install partners – which the firm says can be installed by a qualified mechanic in ‘just a few days’. The kit is also fully reversible, with no cutting or drilling of parts necessary for the EV conversion.
Specifications wise, this conversion kit packs a 42kWh battery pack, which are located both in the boot, and under the front bonnet where the internal combustion engine once stood. This is enough to deliver a combined range of around 150 miles, with rapid charging capabilities that allow the battery to be fully recharged in around an hour. Power and torque on the electric motor is up compared to the petrol engine it replaces, now delivering 160 horsepower and 310Nm of torque to the rear wheels. This, combined with an improved power to weight ratio, delivers a 0-60mph time of just six seconds.
Electrogenic aren’t just involved in converting coveted weekend cars into electric form. Last year, it ran a trial with the UK’s Ministry of Defence to convert several British Army Land Rovers, to gauge their use in electric form.
Electrogenic CEO, Steve Drummond, commented:
“We’re delighted to introduce the latest addition to our world-leading range of ‘plug-and-play’, EV conversion kits. We’ve long been intrigued by the concept of a light, well-balanced, rear-wheel-drive electrified modern-classic, one that truly delivers when it comes to the old-school thrill of driving. It seems we weren’t alone, as we’ve received a great deal of interest in the idea of an MX-5 conversion over the years. It’s exciting to finally reveal our creation to the world and give MX-5 fans the chance to electrify one of the most popular sports cars in history.“
