Daimler Truck opens a new Battery Technology Centre in Mannheim for the next generation of commercial vehicles

Daimler Truck has unveiled its new Battery Technology Center (BTC) at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim

The BTC, a state-of-the-art facility, is the cornerstone of Daimler Truck’s efforts in battery technology and high-voltage systems. The facility includes a Technical Center, or “Technikum,” and a pilot line dedicated to developing and producing prototype battery cells and packs. 

The BTC is located in a recently renovated 7,500 square-meter building, expanded with a 3,000 square-metre annex. The facility is equipped with over 60 advanced machines designed for the production of battery cells and packs. It features dedicated areas for cell development and battery pack assembly, crucial for scaling up to future mass production.

Director-General Michael Kleiner, commented: 

“Battery technology is advancing rapidly and is now a crucial component in applications with the highest performance requirements. Baden-Württemberg must seize the opportunity to become a global leader in battery technology. Our state boasts innovative companies, world-class research facilities, and a highly skilled workforce, giving us a strong foundation to succeed. The opening of the Battery Technology Centre is a crucial step in making Baden-Württemberg a future-proof location and turning the current transformation into a success story.”

This new centre not only boosts Daimler Truck’s technological capabilities but also aligns with Baden-Württemberg’s goal to become a leader in battery technology. The BTC’s opening is expected to bolster the Mannheim plant’s future, secure jobs, and advance the company’s electrification strategy.

Founded in 1908, the Mercedes-Benz Mannheim plant, once a major engine production hub,  is now a hub for the next generation of industry professionals. The new BTC solidifies its role in shaping the future of commercial vehicle electrification.
