  • The Government of Canada has announced $25 million worth of funding that will go to support 33 EV related projects across the country, as it looks to further accelerate its transition to electric vehicles.
  • From projects to increase the availability of public EV charging, to the decarbonisation of freight transport and the creation of innovative electric technologies for medium and heavy-duty trucks, the funding will bring a boost across a broad spectrum of the Canadian EV industry.
  • As part of the funding, over 850 more EV chargers are set to be installed across Canada, as part of its Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).

Canada makes significant investment into EVs and EV charging

The funding was granted by the government’s Natural Resources department, with $9.7 million of the $25 million fund helping to support 23 separate public EV charging projects. This will lead to a total of over 850 public charge points, giving Canadians more EV charging opportunities at workplaces, multi-unit residential buildings, beside highways, and in public spaces. Natural Resources Canada also contributed a further $8 million for six projects helping to drive innovation in the medium and heavy-duty truck sectors, uncovering potential barriers to fleet electrification.

Canada is currently working towards a 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan, which includes a target for 60% of all light-duty vehicles sold to be fully-electric – rising to 100%, by 2035. This fresh investment will assist Canada in realising that goal.

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, commented:

“We are taking bold steps to make Canada an energy superpower. Through these projects, we are delivering practical on-the-ground solutions for Quebecers with EVs and partnering with Quebec industry to drive the decarbonization of the transportation sector while strengthening our supply chains and energy independence. Investments like this are how we build a cleaner, more secure and more competitive economy.”

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Claude Guay, added:

“With today’s announcement, we are accelerating the transition to zero emission vehicles with the installation of more than 850 additional EV chargers across Canada, many of which will be in Quebec, and by empowering breakthrough Canadian technologies that improve electric vehicle performance, safety and reliability in Canada. With Green Freight funding, we are proving that clean transportation is not just for consumers, but also for commercial, industrial and municipal fleets that are transforming the economy across sectors while lowering our emissions.”
