BYD has launched the Atto 8 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, which becomes the manufacturer’s flagship electric SUV in Europe with seating for seven, an impressive 405 mile range, and recharge speeds as low as five minutes thanks to compatibility with BYD’s Flash Charging technology.
BYD goes further upmarket in Europe with the new Atto 8
Already being sold in its home territory of China, where it’s badged as the BYD Tang L, this new model will sit at the top of BYD’s SUV offerings in Europe, taking on other large electric SUVs such as the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90. The technical specifications point to a pretty comprehensive package – range stands at a maximum of 405 miles thanks to a 115kWh battery, while there is also the option of a performance variant which delivers a rapid 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds – though range on the performance version drops to 374 miles.
The Atto 8 will become the first BYD EV sold in Europe to support its megawatt-speed Flash Charging technology. In the Atto 8’s case, this will allow for a 10-70% recharge to take place in five minutes, while a 10-97% charge will take just nine minutes. There’s no actual infrastructure in Europe just yet, but BYD plans to have 3,000 Flash Charging stations active across Europe by the end of 2027.
There’s no word on official pricing for the BYD Atto 8 yet, but the rumours are that this large electric SUV will start at around the £50,000 / €60,000 mark. Despite the impressive level of equipment and striking design then, it should still undercut other seven-seat EVs like the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90 on price – and its support for BYD Flash Charging will also prove to be a key differentiator. Order books for the Atto 8 are set to open in Europe from the start of next year.
BYD Executive Vice President, Stella Li, commented:
“As a technology company, BYD is all about turning intelligence into reality – and the ATTO 8 is the perfect example of this. It blends our latest powertrain and 2nd Generation Blade Battery to offer more than 600km of range, seven-seat flexibility and our latest innovations in cabin technology. And FLASH Charging is the breakthrough for EVs that everyone has been waiting for – recharging as fast as refuelling, removing range anxiety. With this model, we’re really demonstrating how our investment in R&D isn’t just focused on coming up with fresh ideas; we’re putting these improvements into the hands of customers around the world, to improve their lives.”
