BT Group makes UK’s largest commercial EV fleet order

  • British telecommunications firm, BT Group, has placed what is the largest single order of a commercial EV fleet, with over 3,500 EVs set to be delivered to the group over the next year.
  • The order is part of BT Group’s efforts on fleet electrification, with its EV fleet set to sit at nearly 8,000 once this latest order is completed.
  • Over 50% of vans currently on order by BT Group are EV models.

BT places order for over 3,500 commercial EVs

The significant fully-electric order will be fulfilled by four manufacturers, namely Ford, Stellantis, Toyota, and Renault – all OEMs that offer a strong range of electric commercial vehicles. Once this order is completed in 2026, BT Group expects to operate the largest electric commercial fleet in the UK, when it’ll operate nearly 8,000 EVs.

BT Group hopes to extend the number of households and businesses it offers full fibre to from 16 million now, to 25 million by the end of 2026 – which will require a significant amount of not only people power but van power. Therefore, this move to zero-emission vehicles which will be heavily utilised also contributes to BT Group’s goal of net-zero emissions by March 2031.

Simon Lowth, Chief Financial Officer at BT Group, commented:

“By integrating yet more electric vehicles into our operations, we are taking another significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the UK’s transition to a greener future. As we extend our full fibre build from 16 million homes and businesses today to 25 million by the end of 2026, having the most efficient, sustainable electric vehicles will give our engineers the edge as they connect customers at pace to our next generation networks. Our modern fleet will help us to be more efficient and deliver a better service for our customers.”

Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister, added:

“Businesses have a crucial role to play in driving the transition to electric cars and vans. That’s why it’s fantastic to see that BT Group have made the most of our plug-in van grant to order 3,500 brand new EVs – which means they will have the largest electric commercial fleet in the UK.

We want to help more businesses decarbonise their operations, and we’ve extended our plug-in van grant with £120m funding to help roll out more zero emission vans on our roads – part of our £2.3bn to support industry and consumers switch to EVs and make the transition a success.”
