Bolt buys Viggo in landmark move to turn Denmark’s taxi fleets electric

  • Bolt acquires Viggo, Denmark’s leading electric taxi company, to expand its electric vehicle (EV) fleet in Denmark.
  • Viggo operates over 300 electric vehicles in Copenhagen and Aarhus, aligning with Bolt’s sustainability goals.
  • The acquisition aims to scale ride-hailing services in Denmark and collaborate with local fleet operators to promote EV adoption across Europe.

Bolt brings in Viggo to accelerate electric taxi growth in Denmark and contribute to Europe’s electrifying fleets

Ride-sharing giant, Bolt, has acquired Viggo, Denmark’s top-performing taxi company. This acquisition is part of Bolt’s EV expansion across Europe as the company seeks to carve out market dominance to get ahead of the electric fleet switch.

Viggo, founded in 2019, operates more than 300 electric vehicles in Copenhagen and Aarhus. The company has quickly earned a reputation for premium service and sustainable mobility. Its 100% electric fleet aligns perfectly with Bolt’s goal of reducing carbon emissions and providing eco-friendly transport options.

With this acquisition, Bolt aims to launch and scale ride-hailing services in Denmark. This is a natural step for Bolt, as it already runs a successful ebike rental service in Copenhagen.

The company plans to continue collaborating with local fleet operators in Denmark. The goal is to scale the service efficiently and increase vehicle utilisation. For fleet operators, this partnership offers access to Bolt’s technology and a platform designed for growth.

The European Commission is considering new laws to promote fleet electrification, aiming to decarbonize road transport. These laws would require companies with fleets larger than 100 vehicles to switch to electric cars by 2030. The EU is also working toward banning new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. This push could drive significant EV sales, particularly in fleet markets, where 60% of new car sales are made. The changes could also lead to an increase in used electric cars, further promoting EV adoption across Europe.

Bolt’s investment in Denmark highlights its broader mission of creating sustainable, affordable transport options. This is just the beginning of a broader push to electrify taxi fleets across Europe.
