Blaenau Gwent Council joins Kerbo Charge trials, making history in Wales

  • Blaenau Gwent Council is pioneering on-street EV charging in Wales, trialling the Kerbo Charge system for residents without driveways.
  • Kerbo Charge offers potential annual savings of up to £1,100 by enabling affordable home charging for more households.
  • Successful trials across the UK, including in West Berkshire and Enfield, suggest widespread adoption of on-street EV charging solutions.

Blaenau Gwent Council adopts Kerbo Charge in pivotal move for Welsh local authorities

Blaenau Gwent Council becomes the first local authority in Wales to introduce on-street charging for residents. The council is currently trialling the Kerbo Charge system. This unique through-pavement channel is designed to make EV charging accessible to the 40% of households without driveways.

Kerbo Charge are in an intense trialling phase, with local authorities around the UK signing up, or even fully adopting the system. The Kerbo Charge model could save residents up to £1,100 a year by opening home charging prices to those without driveways.

Ebbw Vale resident Sharon, described how the system was benefitting her:

“I was considering moving back to a diesel car because charging my electric car using public charge points costs way more than diesel. Now it costs around £7 per charge and I’m staying with electric!”

West Berkshire Council became the first to successfully complete the Kerbo trial just last month. Since then, Enfield has become the first area in London to trial the tech. Now, Wales is following suit.

Michael Goulden, CEO of Kerbo Charge, applauded Blaenau Gwent:

“Congratulations to Blaenau Gwent on moving quickly to make home charging available to residents with street parking – a high percentage of Welsh homes are terraced or semi-detached so offering this technology will make a real difference to many Welsh families”.

With trials underway around the country, it seems charging could finally become equitised by on-street solutions. We will only foster an encompassing and just EV transition if we allow everyone to gain the same benefits from the EV lifestyle.
