Bedford Borough Council to install over 500 new EV chargers by 2040, with a £1 million UK government investment

  • 500+ new EV chargers by 2040 in Bedford Borough, backed by £1 million government funding and private investment.
  • First phase: 256 chargers, with plans to double the number for widespread EV access.
  • Supports the 2035 petrol and diesel ban, improving air quality and promoting sustainable transport.

New EV charging network coming to Bedford Borough by 2040 with £1 million LEVI scheme investment

Bedford Borough Council has launched a tender for new electric vehicle (EV) charge points across the area. The project is part of the council’s plan to support residents in switching to cleaner, greener transport. The government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) scheme is providing the funding.

The council has secured £1,010,000 from the government. This funding will be matched by private investment from the selected charge point operator.

They will install 256 chargers in the first phase, mostly 7kW units. Over time, that number will double, ensuring widespread access to EV charging. The contract will run until 2040.

Bedford Borough’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, Councillor Nicola Gribble, commented:

“This is a significant step forward in our commitment to creating a sustainable transport network for Bedford Borough. By increasing the number of public charge points, we are empowering residents to make the switch to electric vehicles with confidence.

This project, supported by government funding and private investment, will not only improve air quality but also contribute to our wider efforts to tackle climate change. We believe this initiative will be instrumental in supporting residents as we move towards the 2035 deadline for the end of new petrol and diesel car sales.”

The tender process will take several months, leading to the council awarding the contract in Summer 2025. Work will begin in Autumn.

As the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel cars approaches, projects like this are essential and have been called upon by various industry bodies. By investing in sustainable transport, the UK is paving the way for a healthier environment for all.
