Austrian battery testing firm AVILOO has launched the UK’s first independently underwritten battery warranty for used electric vehicles, offering buyers £2,700 in compensation if a purchased EV battery’s state of health falls below its guaranteed threshold within a year. The warranty is built on AVILOO’s FLASH Test, a three-minute battery health check covering around 96% of EV models on the market. The offering will go live in July, as part of a simultaneous rollout across eight European markets.
The warranty operates separately from AVILOO’s existing battery health certificate. For each vehicle, a minimum state of health floor is calculated from AVILOO’s diagnostics database, set against the vehicle reaching 20,000 kilometres over the 12-month warranty period. If the battery’s state of health drops below that threshold during this period, the EV buyer will receieve £2,700 in compensation plus a refund of their FLASH Test costs.
AVILOO’s footprint in European EV resale market is already significant, with car brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Porsche selecting it as their third-party battery testing provider. Leasing companies Ayvens and Arval are also using the diagnostics it their end-of-lease remarketing, while auction operators BCA and Cox Automotive have integrated the FLASH Test into their European operations.
The UK used EV market is riper than ever, with significant discounts to be had on EVs which are only a few years old with minimal mileage. However, buyer confidence, particularly around battery condition, has lagged, even though research proves that EV batteries have minimal degradation even after heavy usage. The used car sector has struggled to communicate this fact, however. This battery warranty built on independent data is another step towards ensuring more drivers can feel comfortable in purchasing a used electric car.
Marcus Berger, CEO of AVILOO, said:
“The AVILOO Battery Warranty raises the used electric vehicle market to a new level. For the first time in the UK, we are providing the foundation for a warranty based solely on objective, independent measurement data. This builds trust and gives British dealers and buyers a level of certainty that simply has not existed before. The UK has one of Europe’s most dynamic used EV markets, and we see enormous appetite from both dealers and consumers to get this right. With the Battery Warranty, we are setting a new industry standard – one that provides orientation for all market participants, strengthens the case for electric mobility, and ensures that used EVs are seen not as a risk, but as a sustainable, trustworthy choice.”
