- Australia’s Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries revealed the country’s June passenger car sales, revealing how EV sales have performed in the first half of 2024.
- A total of 48,872 electric vehicles were sold from January to June.
- However, EVs made up a larger proportion of vehicles sold in June 2023 compared to June 2024.
Will Australia crack 100k EV sales by the end of the year?
For June specifically, 9,939 fully electric cars were sold in the country, accounting for 8.3% of total vehicles sold that month. Of that, Tesla dominated, with the Model 3 and Model Y coming in with sales figures of 2,906 and 1,777 respectively. The Model Y’s performance is to be expected, also being the best selling EV globally, and recently the best selling car in Europe – including its ICE rivals.
The BYD SEAL came in third place, with 706 sales for the month of June. BYD’s third place on the podium once again highlights its rapid market expansion, and comes just the day after its DOLPHIN electric car was awarded Car Dealer Car of The Year Award, over in the UK.
Despite a large number of countries across the world introducing future mandates on the sale of new electric cars, Australia currently has no such specific mandate – instead opting for a fuel efficiency standard, which will eventually be brought down to zero emissions by approximately 2040. For reference, in the United Kingdom, which has a 2035 EV mandate, expected to be imminently pushed forward to 2030, 19% of new cars sold in the same period were electric.
