Amazon future-proof its German and UK fleets with its largest electric truck order yet

  • Amazon ordered 200 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric trucks for use in Germany and the UK, supporting its net-zero emissions goal by 2040.
  • The 40-ton trucks have a 500 km range and will use fast chargers at Amazon facilities, charging 20%-80% in under an hour.
  • Public charging infrastructure remains limited, but Amazon is working with regulators to expand access in the UK and EU.

The trucks will operate in Germany and the UK. They’ll handle high-mileage routes between Amazon’s fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations. These 40-ton trucks have a range of 500 km (311 miles).

To support the rollout, Amazon is building a fast-charging network at its facilities. These chargers can power the trucks from 20% to 80% in under an hour. This makes charging compatible with drivers’ legal break times.

While it’s ever-improving, public charging infrastructure for fleets crossing Europe is still limited. Amazon is working with regulators and charging companies to improve access.

Andreas Marschner, Amazon’s VP of Worldwide Operations Sustainability, commented:

“This is a a major milestone for us. Decarbonizing the heavy goods sector is the most challenging part of the transportation space.

The major transportation corridors in the UK and Germany are still very limited with public charging and high-capacity charging we would need for trucks. This is a challenge these days as it reduces the ability to use these assets.”

The order is also significant for Daimler. It’s the largest electric truck order for the Mercedes-Benz Trucks brand. Amazon’s efforts are part of its commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Fleets continue to drive decarbonisation, taking the lead on the roads with innovative technology.
