- Amazon’s Indian home delivery fleet continues to reduce emissions and increase air quality, after the online retailer announced that it had surpassed its goal of having 10,000 EVs within its delivery fleet.
- The 10,000 mark has been reached more than a year ahead of schedule.
- These 10,000 EVs have been designed and manufactured by OEMs within India, and are now undertaking deliveries in 500 cities across India, including major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
Amazon’s Indian EV fleet continues to grow
Alongside these smaller EVs that cater for the last step of the delivery process, Amazon India is also exploring electric HGVs for its logistics. As part of the ‘Laneshift’ initiative, on a busy 350 kilometre Bengaluru to Chennai expressway, Amazon, along with several industry partners, will be testing the viability of zero-emission trucks along this route.
Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, commented:
“Having more than 10,000 electric vehicles in our fleet and successfully testing long-range electric trucks are achievements that we are very proud of at Amazon. As a company and as a country, we must transition to zero tailpipe emission trucks to meet India’s net-zero goals and cut reliance on diesel freight.
The logistics industry still faces limited charging infrastructure and range anxiety, and we are excited to continue to work with the government and key players in the industry to find solutions.“
As a signatory of The Climate Pledge, Amazon is targeting net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040. This significant zero-emission fleet operation, combined with the growing number of electric heavy duty trucks it operates, will help Amazon to achieve this goal. Over in the U.S., Amazon is taking similar steps, with a new rollout of electric HGVs, and has over 20,000 electric delivery vans in operation in the country.
