ABB lays out steps to achieve crucial electric fleet transition to power a successful future for Europe

  • Key players in transport and emobility agree that electrifying commercial vehicles is crucial for decarbonisation.
  • To speed up the transition, a fast-charging network, proactive grid expansion, and stable financial incentives are needed.
  • Supporting in-house charging infrastructure for logistics fleets, especially small companies, is essential for successful decarbonisation.

ABB committee plans industry-wide steps to decarbonise fleets and push Europe to a successful electric industry

Transport plays a crucial role in Europe’s economy—but the industry faces a tough challenge. It must reduce emissions while staying competitive globally.

At a meeting in Berlin last Friday, key players from the transport and emobility sectors gathered to discuss how to tackle this challenge. Michael Bueltmann from ABB E-mobility, Christoph Schuler and Kim Kohlmeyer from MAN Truck & Bus, and Johannes Pallasch from the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure shared their thoughts. Together, they dissected the necessity of swift and efficient electrification across Europe’s fleets.

While the technology for electric vehicles and charging infrastructure is already available, it’s not enough on its own.

A joint effort between the industry, policymakers, and governments is essential. To make this transition faster and more affordable, several measures need to be put in place.

First, the truck fast-charging network needs full funding and quick implementation. Charging infrastructure must be treated as a matter of public interest. Proactive grid expansion is also needed, with Europe set to require 50,000 charging points by 2030.

Moreover, truck toll revenues should support the development of charging infrastructure and incentives for electric trucks. Stable financial incentives like tax breaks and subsidies are vital for building market confidence. Finally, the development of in-house charging stations for logistics fleets must be supported, especially for small transport companies.

Together, the ABB committee’s steps will accelerate the decarbonisation of transport and support Europe’s green transition. The steps should be considered by industry players and governments to ensure not only a sustainable future, but a profitable economy.
