The A400 aims to improve user experience. Its 32-inch interface provides a straightforward, smartphone-like interaction, guiding users through the charging process step-by-step. This design aims to achieve a 98% charging success rate, addressing common issues such as confusion and payment problems.

Asset management is another key feature of the A400. ABB E-mobility has implemented a cloud-based toolchain to manage charging assets similarly to telecommunication networks. This system promises 24/7 service level agreements (SLAs), targeting high success rates and uptime, alongside swift service response times.

Michael Halbherr, CEO of ABB E-mobility, explains the vision of the A400:

“Charging networks constitute a mission-critical transport infrastructure on the way to an energy-efficient and climate-neutral mobility era. The A400 has been designed from the ground up as a system for the reliable and cost-effective delivery of energy, enabling our customers to operate their network at the highest level, and achieving their desired economic outcome.

At ABB E-Mobility, we have taken key lessons from our extensive experience and are obsessed with creating a charging experience that is reliable, scalable, managed and secure, while ensuring interoperability and performance.”

Durability and efficiency are central to the A400’s design, with a projected 10-year product lifespan. The charger features dynamic power sharing in 50 kW increments to accommodate various charging patterns. Additionally, it employs silicon carbide-based power modules and a patented two-phase cooling technology to ensure reliability and efficiency.

The A400 supports charging for two vehicles simultaneously at 200 kW each or a single vehicle at up to 400 kW. It meets regulatory requirements in both the U.S. and Europe. An integrated payment system is designed to streamline transactions, addressing one of the main barriers to successful charging.

Issues of payment and reliability continue to shroud the charge point landscape. The A400 is an impressive answer to these concerns. Making payment as simple as possible, while doing everything possible to ensure reliability, is sure to increase driver confidence in charging infrastructure.
