2,200 km EV road trip across South Africa aims to dispel EV misconceptions

South Africa’s naamsa is about to put EVs to the ultimate test. A group of 10 adventurous individuals will soon embark on a 4-day, 2,200 km road trip, driving only electric cars. The journey is taking place ahead of the naamsa SA Auto Week conference.
Five different EV models will take part: the BMW iX, BYD Seal, Mercedes EQ, Volvo XC40, and VW ID4 Pro. The convoy will navigate tough terrains like the Swartberg Pass, testing the cars’ range and charging capabilities. On the way, they’ll prove that EVs can handle remote locations and long distances across the country.

Participants will document their experiences on social media throughout the trip
They’ll share real-time updates about charging stops, range accuracy, and the overall driving experience. The road trip will also be filmed and turned into a documentary titled Escaping the Noise.
Key topics covered will include the ease of charging, the availability of charging infrastructure in South Africa, and concerns about load-shedding. By the end of the trip, participants will provide upfront answers about their long-range EV experience. Let’s see how well this EV fleet does, and how easily the drivers will make it to their goal.
