After expanding from its traditional motorway charging locations, IONITY has opened its first London urban EV charging hub, located at Greenwich Shopping Park in south-east London. It’s one of the first examples of the CPO’s move into urban charging ventures, and follows a similar urban charging hub opened in Birmingham earlier this year.
IONITY continues to expand its public charging footprint in the UK
The new charging site is located on a busy retail park, just a stones throw from the busy A206 road and only a couple minutes drive from major attractions such as The O2 Arena. Opened this week, the bay features 12 charging bays, with charging power of up to 400kW on offer. For EVs that can take full advantage of those 400kW speeds, such as the BMW iX3, these chargers allow for 10-80% recharge times of well under half an hour. IONITY isn’t the only CPO pushing these top-level charge speeds, with Fastned this week also announcing the arrival of 400kW units to another urban location.
The CPO’s ongoing partnership with Uber, which gives electric Uber drivers access to discounted charging rates, means the new site will also support further electrification of Uber’s London fleet, with urban locations seen as key to unlocking more adoption.
To celebrate the launch of the new location, IONITY will offer free charging at the site on Friday 21st August, with all drivers able to benefit from the free offer through the IONITY app.
Jeroen van Tilburg, CEO at IONITY, commented:
“Our expansion goes beyond long-distance travel to enable reliable charging where demand is growing fastest: in urban areas. We must meet drivers where they need us, and in cities like London the next stage of electrification is now taking place. Growing numbers of drivers are choosing to make the switch to electric and it is vital that the supply of ultra-fast chargers is rapidly scaled up. We’re bringing up to 400 kW into urban areas, giving drivers the speed and reliability they expect from IONITY, closer to where they live and work.”
