Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off the latest generation of its compact GLA SUV, marking the first time this model has been made available with a fully-electric powertrain. Riding on similar 800-volt architecture to the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV, the new GLA EV will bring an impressive 400-plus mile range to the compact electric SUV segment, along with ultra-rapid 320kW recharging capabilities.
Design-wise, the new GLA takes a radical departure from the previous petrol model, with significant changes on the exterior – with star-shaped daytime running lights, an illuminated front grille, and a lower silhouette. The inside sees the implementation of the ‘MBUX Superscreen’, which spans the full width of the dashboard from the driver to passenger side. We’ve also seen this infotainment style rolled out on other new Mercedes EVs, such as the CLA and new C-Class Electric.
At launch, the GLA will be available in fully-electric form, with hybrid models to follow. The EV drivetrains available include the GLA 200, confirmed to start at around €48,000, followed by the €55,000 GLA 250+, and the range-topping €58,000 GLA 350 4MATIC – which also brings an all-wheel-drive setup to the table. That last model packs a 85 kWh battery, good enough for a range of 408 miles (657 kilometres), making it one of the longest range small SUVs on the market.
The new GLA enters one of Europe’s most competitive segments, going up against rivals such as the BMW iX1, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Tesla Model Y. It follows a now-familiar strategy from Mercedes-Benz, having launched electric versions of the CLA and C-Class ahead of their combustion equivalents – a reversal of the brand’s earlier approach of launching petrol and diesel models first, and indicative of an evolving car market.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG, commented:
“The new GLA is designed to excite customers every day. Drawing on 140 years of innovation, we’ve built the most expressive GLA ever. Combined with a newly designed interior that brings even more space and comfort, we’ve further elevated the appeal of what is currently already our best-selling compact model.”
