Kempower reaches megawatt truck charging milestone in California

Windrose electric truck charges at megawatt speeds on Kempower MCS unit installed in San Bernadino, California
  • Kempower, Windrose, and EV Realty have completed a successful megawatt truck charging session at EV Realty’s San Bernardino, California charging hub, marking a significant step towards making public megawatt charging a real-world reality for North American truck operators.
  • It is also the first MCS charging session with a Kempower Mega Satellite MCS unit installed in North America.
  • The EV Realty site points towards a future of scalable charging for electric freight corridors, assisting significant decarbonisation in the cargo transportation chain.

Megawatt charging becoming a real-world reality in North America

Kempower has completed its first MCS charging session in North America, with its Mega Satellite charging unit deployed at EV Realty’s San Bernardino truck charging site in California. The test, carried out with a Windrose electric truck, moves megawatt charging out of the lab and into a live logistics environment.

The 1,200kW Kempower units are aimed squarely at bringing down dwell times for heavy-duty electric trucks to a time more comparable to diesel refuelling cycles.

Truck OEMs across North America are already lining up MCS-compatible vehicles, including Windrose, Volvo Trucks, and Tesla’s Semi program. This milestone proves that the technology works in the real world, and the next step is for MCS charging infrastructure to grow across North America, making electric trucks an even more attractive option against their typically diesel-fuelled counterparts.

Suncheth Bhat, Chief Commercial Officer at EV Realty, commented:

“MCS is a potential game changer for fleets looking to reduce dwell times and improve the efficiency of their operations. Fleets are excited about the trucks but have questions about where they will be able to charge. We are building sites that can serve any heavy-duty truck, including those utilizing MCS. This test confirms that we will be ready for real-world MCS charging when the trucks hit the road later this year.”

Jed Routh, VP of Markets and Products at Kempower North America, added:

“This milestone of the first successful MCS charging session in North America with Kempower hardware marks a major step for heavy-duty charging in the region, demonstrating real-world interoperability and reliable delivery. The collaboration with EV Realty makes this possible, positioning Kempower’s reliable, flexible charging solutions to support the continued electrification of heavy-duty transport in North America.”
