Tarmac to deploy electric HGV fleet across London and the South East

Tarmac launches an electric HGV fleet in London and the South East, transporting materials to big construction projects across the region.
  • UK building materials firm, Tarmac, is continuing its EV rollout, with a fleet of five electric HGV models and a new electric charging network to support the new vehicles.
  • These vehicles will operate across both the capital and the South East of England, and help supply building materials for major construction projects across the region.
  • The news comes just weeks after the firm announced the launch of Scotland’s first fully-electric concrete mixer, demonstrating Tarmac’s commitment to electrification.

The new electric trucks will be some of the first to join Tarmac’s fleet, and are being delivered in partnership with DAF Trucks and Renault Trucks. Charging infrastructure to support the rollout of these new vehicles is being supplied by British charging manufacturer, Voltempo. For example, a 250kW charger will be installed at Tarmac’s Paddington concrete depot, whilst an even faster-charging megawatt charging system will be installed at its Northfleet plant.

Despite overall eHGV market share in the UK remaining low compared to diesel alternatives, it’s clear with this news that the tide is starting to turn. It follows a number of significant eHGV-related moves by businesses in the UK, including Royal Mail, who just this week added the first permanent electric trucks to its fleet, and Amazon, who are committed to rolling out 160 electric trucks across the UK.

Ben Garner, Director of Logistics at Tarmac, commented:

“These significant new additions to our electric fleet together with a London-wide charging network mean that we’re scaling electrification and helping customers cut carbon across construction logistics. With material deliveries coming into our Paddington facility via our rail freight network, onward journeys can now be made by eHGV – providing customers in London with a leading, low carbon and multi modal logistics offer.”

Michael Boxwell, Founder of Voltempo, added:

“Tarmac’s commitment to decarbonizing logistics is second to none. Their leadership and willingness to invest in electric HGVs and charging network infrastructure, including Voltempo’s ultra-rapid HyperCharger MCS, is exactly the kind of ambition we need to drive real change across the sector. We’re proud to have Tarmac as a founding partner in eFREIGHT 2030 and look forward to working together to accelerate the transition to zero-emission road freight.”
