  • Iowa has revealed the successful applicants for the state’s first round of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program.
  • The nationwide program, which has allocated a total of $5 billion to create high-speed interstate EV chargers across the country, has allocated a total of $51 million specifically to Iowa – with this first round using around $16.2 million of this.
  • The first $16.2 million will go towards the creation of 28 individual EV charging stations, backed up by a further $5.6 million in private funding – with all sites required to have the option of rapid DC charging.

Expansion for Iowa’s EV charging footprint

Iowa is the latest state to announce a round of NEVI-related funding, following recent announcements from states such as California and North Carolina. Under the rules of the NEVI program, prospective charging stations eligible for funding have to be located within one mile of defined ‘alternative fuel corridors’, which in Iowa, consists of four of its major interstates. Of the charging stations awarded funding under this round, which include operators such as Kwik Trip, Tesla, and BP, all will be required to provide at least four chargepoints capable of 150kWh-plus charge speeds.

As of last year, approximately 270 public charging stations were available in the state of Iowa, which works out at significantly less per head than other states such as California. However, with this single round adding another 28 stations, and plenty of NEVI funding remaining, the future growth of Iowa’s EV charging network looks brighter.
