Swedish transportation firm, Einride, has announced a collaboration with Amazon in the US, which will see it roll out 75 manually operated heavy-duty electric trucks, along with relevant charging infrastructure, to Amazon’s US trucking fleet.
These 75 trucks will be deployed across five locations helping to support Amazon’s middle mile network, moving goods between fulfilment centres and delivery hubs. These new vehicles are expected to cover three million zero-emission miles annually.
The move further strengthens Amazon’s zero-emission supply chain in the US, with the firm already operating a number of electric heavy-duty trucks within its fleet, alongside an increasingly large fleet of Rivian electric delivery vans – the latter of which it has committed to deploying 100,000 units by 2030.
Founded in Sweden back in 2016, Einride has built its reputation on electric and autonomous freight technology, and the Amazon deal represents one of the company’s most significant US deployments to date. This collaboration also signals growing confidence of electric heavy-duty trucks among major US logistics operators, and Amazon’s decision could persuade more operators to make the greener switch.
It’s not just the US where Amazon has been significantly expanding its EV operations, however. In the UK, the company is in the process of rolling out 160 electric HGVs. With pressure mounting on large corporations to cut emissions, fleet electrification deals such as this are likely to become increasingly common.
Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, commented:
“Working with Amazon is yet another powerful validation of Einride’s technology and strategic vision. By deploying our intelligent platform within one of the world’s most sophisticated logistics networks, we are accelerating growth, while continuing to build industry-leading operational expertise.”
